Started in June 2015 as a project to demonstrate that more local produce could be made available to households needing food assistance, Healthy Food for All has expanded from its farm roots to include recovering prepared food from large cafeterias and events. The project continues to mature and evolve, and by the time the 3–year anniversary date rolls around, it will have recovered and distributed over 260,000 meals to families in Dane County. “Our hope was to disrupt the current food system and get our community to think differently about what we do with excess food,” said project coordinator Chris Brockel. “I think we have been successful.” This summer Healthy Food for All will be continuing to grow its services by rolling out partnership with The River Food Pantry to collect donations from the Northside Farmers Market, partnering with a local farm to grow and harvest food for families and adding more prepared food donors.
