As we continue the daily challenges of living in a world impacted by a global pandemic and social justice issues, I am increasingly concerned that some are losing faith in the basic tenets of our democracy.

My late grandmother, born in 1899, became eligible to vote in 1920 at age 21 with the passage of the 19th Amendment allowing white women the right to vote. She never missed an election and voted by mail in her later years. Black women and men were finally guaranteed the right to vote with the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Much of the unfortunate rhetoric today is designed to suppress voters while undermining the U.S. Postal Service. There is absolutely no evidence that voting by mail is rampant with fraud. Do not let confusion deter you from participating in one of the most important elections of our time.

You can check the status of your registration and the progress of your absentee ballot on myvote.wi.gov. The Wisconsin Elections Commission mailed 2 million absentee ballot requests. Absentee ballots are being printed and mailed in Dane County as I write.

Please do not delay in requesting your absentee ballot and return it immediately. The Postal Service indicates 2‒5 days for delivery of first class mail. Madison has announced absentee ballot drop off sites to avoid the mail. Follow the ballot directions closely, and call the Madison City Clerk (608-266-4601) or Maple Bluff Clerk (608-244-3048) if you have questions. If you need a witness or a ride to the DMV, call the Dane County Voter ID Coalition (608-285-2141).

If you decide to vote in person Nov. 3, wear a mask. Participating in our system by voting is the hallmark of our democracy. Many of our predecessors fought and died for this cherished right. Do not let misinformation deter you.
