I want to thank the residents of District 12 for your continued confidence in my ability to represent you as I run unopposed for another term on the Dane County Board. It is both an honor and a privilege to serve you. The April 7 spring election ballot (primary is Feb. 18) includes the Presidential Primary, Wisconsin Supreme Court and local school board races, so it is very important to vote. In Wisconsin you can register at the polls on Election Day or at any Madison library. Visit cityofmadison.com for registration details.

Last year there was considerable controversy over the termination of the formal relationship between the Dane County-owned Henry Vilas Zoo and the Zoological Society. It appears the change is off to a good start as, for the first time, participation in formal education programs exceeded 10,000 individuals. Donations are up and, fortunately, a financial investigation found no wrongdoing. A fundraising Conservation Club has been formed with multiple giving levels but a new fundraising partner needs to be selected through a request for proposals process. The zoo has received full accreditation by the national Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Our zoo is one of only 10 zoos in North America that remains free to the public (including parking) as stipulated by the Vilas family, who donated the land in 1904.

The zoo, located at 702 S. Randall Ave., is open 365 days a year, seven days a week, from 9:30 am‒5 pm, including the winter months. The zoo’s mission is dedicated to exceptional animal care and conserving wildlife through local engagement and global partnerships. Similarly, the vision is to be a locally loved community treasure, globally recognized conservation leader that is forever accessible.

More volunteers are needed with a wide array of opportunities. For more information, visit henryvilaszoo.gov. Supervisor Rusk can be reached at 608-249-9667 or rusk@countyofdane.gov.
