As I write we are experiencing hot, rainy weather but most of the beaches in our area are closed because of algae blooms and excess bacteria that can cause illness. Generally, you should not swim following heavy rains. It is clear we must collectively do more to remove phosphorous from the Yahara watershed to improve water quality. We can all do our part with keeping leaves out of the storm sewers but the bulk of the phosphorous comes from agricultural runoff. Dane County is the most agriculturally productive county in Wisconsin, adding tremendously to our overall economy. Quite a dilemma.

Late this summer we will have policy recommendations from the Healthy Farms, Healthy Lakes Task Force made up of water quality experts and policy makers. We look forward to their recommendations. I walk by Lake Mendota most days where so many families enjoy picnicking, boating, sports and fishing, but I rarely see anyone swimming.

My colleagues have re-elected me chair of the Public Protection and Judiciary Committee, which is a great honor. It also means I hear directly from the sheriff when there is a death in the jail, including on July 4. There is always an autopsy and an outside investigation but the loss of life and the impact on families and our professional staff who work so hard to keep everybody safe is major.

The PP&J Committee has two new high school seniors who attend all meetings and participate fully as part of our youth governance program through UW-Extension. They add a great perspective and make us encouraged about the future.
