The Battle of the Books fourth and fifth grade teams competed at Lakeview Library March 10. Battle of the Books is a fun, friendly activity where teams of fourth and fifth grade students read books from a specified list and then compete in a trivia competition based on those books. Each grade has its own reading list consisting of novels from a wide variety of genres.

Battle of the Books is coordinated by Northside Elementary School Library Media Technology Specialists Shannon Furman (Lake View), Jody Retzer Crolla (Gompers), Kelly Nieft (Mendota), Ren Schwab (Sandburg) and Mandy Meloy (Lindbergh).

Teams begin reading in November or December. They compete against teams from their own school, and the champions of the individual schools compete in the Northside Competition at Lakeview Library. One trophy is awarded to the champion fourth-grade team, and one trophy is awarded to the champion fifth-grade team. The Northside champions display the trophies at their schools for the year, and then must bring them back to compete for them again the following year.

This year’s fourth-grade Northside champions are from Lindbergh Elementary School: Katharine Conneely, Natalie Huges, Noelia Valencia and Audrey Viola.

This year’s fifth-grade Northside champions are from Lindbergh Elementary School: Jacquelyn Boakai, Ada Meyer, Phoebe Post and Cynthia Propsom.
