During last year’s county budget process, I proposed several amendments. One of those was to create a program to increase engagement with our county parks. Luckily, this idea was supported and is soon to become a reality. While the planning process is just beginning, we hope to offer this new program later this year, hopefully by summer.

While the program is geared toward our youth, adults will also be welcome to participate. Participants will sign up and volunteer in a variety of service opportunities in our county parks, recreational areas and preserves. The expectation will be to volunteer across several different areas throughout different seasons of the year.

Some areas we have brainstormed so far include invasive species removal, native plant restoration, educational outreach, administrative/technological assistance, Friends groups or department meetings, job shadowing and social events. The goal is to get more people into our county green spaces, enjoying recreational as well as conservation activities.

Each year there will be a special recognition ceremony honoring those who have reached the minimum requirements of the program. Hopefully, our Friends groups will grow and more people will be working and playing together in the beautiful outdoors. People will also have more exposure to environmental career opportunities.

No prior experience will be necessary for participation in this program. People of all abilities are welcome to join in. Everyone has something to offer.

While we are in the early planning stages for this program, I want to share that it will be available soon. I love the idea of getting more people into our parks. The more people involved in conservation efforts, the healthier our community becomes.
