First Street well demolition
The former Well 3 at the corner of First and East Johnson Streets will be demolished in anticipation of the reconstruction of East Johnson Street. The reconstruction calls for the widening of First Street at the intersection to facilitate turning and to allow better pedestrian/bicycle access to cross First Street.

The Avenue Apartments
The Madison Development Corporation has requested demolition of an office building to build a 6-unit row house and a 30-unit apartment. The Emerson East Neighborhood Association created a subcommittee to review the proposal and develop the association’s response. I encourage anyone who is interested to review the submitted plans and submit their comments. The current timeline is the Plan Commission on Dec. 17 and the Common Council on Jan. 8, 2019.

Tennyson/Packers Apartment
There is a proposal by Northshore Rentals, developer of the Granite Ridge Apartments, for a building consisting of 67 units, 62 indoor parking stalls and 2,000 square feet of commercial space at the corner of Tennyson Lane and Packers Avenue. The proposed schedule for review is the same as The Avenue Apartments.

Packers/Schlimgen intersection
Residents near the Schlimgen Street/Packers Avenue intersection have expressed concerns about pedestrians crossing Packers Avenue. Because of the relatively few access points to the Sherman Neighborhood, this intersection is especially important for residents. During the discussion of several proposals at the corner, residents have asked to add this intersection to the Traffic Signal Priority List.

I have asked Traffic Engineering to respond to the concerns and propose near-term solutions. They are considering the following to improve the safety of pedestrians crossing Packers Avenue: upgrading the crosswalk painting to the more visible continental style (vertical bars), and adding an overhead driver feedback sign project to the list of potential projects for consideration in 2019.
