The Friends of Starkweather Creek (FSC) is a citizen’s group dedicated to the enhancement of the watershed’s environmental quality and health through stewardship, education and advocacy. Over the years, FSC has organized creek cleanups and celebrations to raise awareness and pride in the creek, as well as actively advocated for responsible development in the watershed.

FSC has recently decided to take a more active role in rejuvenating and restoring the historical ecosystems in our watershed through restoration work parties. Work parties are a great way to practice ecological restoration, learn about plant communities, and make friends. No experience is necessary. Activities include trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, native plantings, seed collection and broadcasting, and prairie burns.

FSC currently has a limited selection of tools (loppers, pruners, handsaws, shovels, etc.) for these work parties. Depending on the work activity, if you own any relevant tools, you may be asked to bring your own. FSC is also accepting donated used tools if you find you have extras.

Volunteers should wear appropriate clothing for the weather (dress in layers), sturdy footwear and work gloves. Most work parties last approximately two hours, with the group often having snacks or refreshments afterward. Volunteer restoration work parties take place throughout the year.
