Thanks to our Northside and larger Madison community for making some happy spring memories for East students and staff.

STEAM Week, May 20‒24, featured guests from the UW-Madison research community and professionals representing corporate and public sector careers. Math and science are everywhere. We also honored the 2019 Trevor G. Knight Rising Stars in Mathematics: Khadidiatou Sene and Isabel Hernandez. Congratulations to them on being recognized for a positive approach to learning mathematics.

The 20th annual Pi-Mile Run/Walk brought fans of fitness, pastry and mathematics together to the starting line in Warner Park May 25. This event is the primary support for the East High School Graphing Calculator Fund — and there is pie. Well done, Math Club. Thank you to our local grocers for “tactical support” in supplying both ingredients and whole pies.

The UW Madison College of Engineering Chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) hosted 18 East students May 3 for LEEP Day 2019 (Latinx Exploring Engineering Professions). It was a full day of activities, lab tours and interactive sessions with students and faculty on the UW Madison engineering campus. Students were excited to hear research explained by graduate students who are native Spanish speakers, and to be hosted by two SHPE members who are East alumni: Brandon Alvarez-Carerra (Class of 2015, nuclear engineering) and Katherine Ceballos (Class of 2017, computer science). Thank you to Bilingual Resource Specialist Silvia Gomez de Soriano and Upward Bound Coordinator Brenda Her for accompanying our group.

East students Terron Golden, Joshua Jacobson and Khaleilei Kidau traveled to Detroit during spring break to attend the National Society of Black Engineers Annual Convention. They had the opportunity to network with black engineers from NASA, IBM, Ford Motor Company, Boeing and other major corporations. They also watched remote-control race car and robotics competitions, visited Wayne State University engineering labs and explored the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. We are grateful for the community support provided by Go Fund Me donors, bake sale customers and penny drive participants, which kept this trip affordable for all.
