What are the facts about Covid-19 and our pets?
June Brooks, DVM, Northside Animal Hospital

Every day we learn more about this unique and challenging opponent. As I write this in late April, this is what we know about the SARS-CoV-2 infection in pets:

  • On April 22 the CDC announced the first verified cases of the virus in two cats in the United States.
  • Globally, five pets have tested positive — three cats and two dogs.
  • Currently, there is no information suggesting pets are a source of the virus that causes COVID-19.
  • Humans seem to be the cause for pets’ infections.

All veterinarians are concerned for the health and well-being of our companion animals. Veterinary associations are working closely with government agencies, nationally and internationally, to stay informed on the latest and most accurate information regarding this pandemic.

So, what is a pet owner to do? Until we learn more, here is a simple list:

  • Wash your hands before and after interacting with your pet. People pose the greatest danger to your companion.
  • Use social distancing. Keep your companion away from other people and other people’s pets. Use social distancing at all times.
  • Be sure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations and parasite protection. Keeping parasites and other pathogens away will support your pet’s immune system.
  • If you are ill, get tested and self-quarantine. You should restrict your contact with your pets and other animals just as you would with other people. If possible, have someone else in your household care for any animals while you are ill. If you must care for your animals, wear a cloth face covering and use the same precautions you would with a person.

If you have questions, ask. We are here for you. We will get through this together. Stay well.
