The Northside’s local response to a global crisis

With schools and workplaces closing to reduce community spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, many families have been left scrambling to find a way to pay the bills and put food on the table. The Northside Planning Council (NPC) and FEED Kitchens launched FEED To Go as a way to get free meals to families while keeping local businesses running. More than 13,000 meals have been cooked, cooled, packaged, labeled and delivered to local community centers to distribute since March 19 through FEED To Go. FEED Kitchens, a local food business incubator operated by the Northside Planning Council (NPC), is serving as the site for meal preparation and packaging. El Wiscorican (Luis Carmona), Melly Mel’s (Carmell Jackson), Cafe Costa Rica (Thony Clarke) and Jolly Frog (Rene Perez) prepare the meals at FEED Kitchens. FEED To Go compensates the food cart and catering businesses, who might otherwise be closed, for preparing the meals. Pictured here, FEED To Go staff and volunteers pack up meals at FEED Kitchens to bring to various community sites. Text “FEEDTOGO” to 833-502-0256 for updates about when and where free meals are dropped off. Learn more, donate or volunteer at feedkitchens.org/feedtogo.
