Scout Troop 127

The scouts of Troop 127 spent the fall hiking, biking, exploring corn mazes and camping. We look forward to enjoying some winter cabin camping, ice fishing, skiing, day trips and other winter fun.

As a youth-led organization, scouts are also gaining organizational and leadership skills as they plan the adventures they want to have this coming spring and summer. The scouts are excited about the weeklong summer camp they attend each summer, which offers activities from archery, shooting sports, small boat sailing and climbing to leatherworking and even astronomy. The scouts also plan “high adventures,” which are challenging adventures that sometimes take a year or two to plan. The troop is actively exploring a sailing/scuba/snorkel trip to the iconic Florida Sea Base.

Nothing compares to the experience and confidence gained by youth as they challenge themselves to create and live these adventures. The scouts also learn that such worthwhile adventures either stretch or just don’t fit in a family budget, so they fundraise to help pay for their camping experiences. As many of our Northside neighbors know, the fall scout popcorn sale just ended. Thank you to those who bought popcorn; each purchase helps send our neighborhood scouts into the outdoors.

While Cub Scouting welcomed girls into their program in September, the older scouting program becomes integrated this February. This is an exciting modernization of the scout program that makes scouting more family oriented. It is a great new opportunity for girls to earn the same recognition for the same work as our boys. It will prepare boys and girls to work and succeed together.

Do you know a child in at least sixth grade who would like to have fun adventuring in the outdoors? We are an active and inclusive group that offers an amazing opportunity for character growth and life-building experiences. It is a perfect time to get involved.
