Fourth- and fifth-grade teams from Gompers, Lake View, Lindbergh, Mendota and Sandburg elementary schools have been competing in Battle of the Books, a fun, friendly activity where teams of students read books from a specified list and then compete in a trivia competition based on those books. Each grade level has their own reading list consisting of novels from a wide variety of genres.

Battle of the Books is coordinated by School Library Media Technology Specialists Shannon Furman (Lake View), Jody Retzer Crolla (Gompers), Kelly Nieft (Mendota), Ren Schwab (Sandburg) and Mandy Meloy (Lindbergh).

Teams generally consist of four students. They begin reading in November or December. Teams will compete against other teams at their school, and the champion from each school will compete against champions from the other Northside schools at the Northside Battle of the Books Competition at Lakeview Public Library
in March.

The winners of this year’s Battle of the Books will be announced in the April/May edition of the Northside News.
