Battle of the Books fourth and fifth-grade teams competed at Lakeview Branch Library March 8. Battle of the Books is a fun, friendly activity where teams of fourth and fifth-grade students read books from a specified list and then compete in a trivia competition based on those books. Each grade has its own reading list, and each list includes novels from a wide variety of genres.

Battle of the Books is coordinated by Northside Elementary School Library Media Technology Specialists: Shannon Furman (Lake View), Jody Retzer Crolla (Gompers), Kelly Nieft (Mendota), Ren Schwab (Sandburg) and Mandy Meloy (Lindbergh).

Teams usually consist of four students. Students begin reading in November or December. They first compete against teams from their own school, and the winning team moves on to the Northside Competition at Lakeview Branch Library. One trophy is awarded to the fourth-grade champion team, and another is awarded to the fifth-grade champion team. The Northside champions keep the trophy displayed at their school for the year and then bring it back to compete for it again the following year.

This year’s Northside championship trophies went to the fourth-grade team from Mendota Elementary School and the fifth-grade team from Lindbergh Elementary School. Congratulations to all the teams who participated.
