We have transitioned into a brand-new year. Somehow, it seems not much has changed since the last one. With the slightly longer days, I feel increasing hope of getting beyond COVID-19. The vaccine is in our community and starting to reach our front-line workers. As more dosages become available, more and more people will be protected. Until then, I hope folks continue to wear masks and keep unnecessary outings to a minimum. Indeed, we are all in this together. Our actions all affect each other more than ever. It is also together that we shall get to the other side of it.

Within the theme of positivity and hope, I wanted to highlight the Office of Energy & Climate Change. This past fall, I sponsored Resolution 181, which called for the Dane County Board of Supervisors to officially support the Dane County Climate Action Plan as well as its implementation. It passed with very strong support.

This plan’s recommendations are based on six guiding principles: equity/justice, economic benefits, health benefits, resiliency/security, bridging the urban and rural divide, and ecosystem benefits. By ending waste and utilizing clean energy, we can improve the health of our community, save money and protect our planet.

One example is the large solar project at the airport. More than 20,000 solar panels will create nine megawatts of renewable electricity. Every project and every action matters. The combination of large government projects, smaller business efforts, and what we can each do at home and in everyday life add up to make a positive difference.

Even in challenging times, there is hope. Please continue to take care of yourself, and those around you. We are stronger together.
