The 2018 Summer Reading and Makerspace program at Lindbergh Elementary Library was a success, with 50‒70 people participating each week.

Monogramming was one of the activities participants enjoyed. Photo by Amanda Meloy

Lindbergh Elementary Library was open Wednesday evenings throughout the summer. The program included book checkout, craft making, free books and vegetables from the garden. Community and parent-lead activities included drum circles, planting, sewing and weaving, watermelon carving, stop-motion animation with the Madison Public Library, fishing with the Yahara Fishing Club, building with Home Depot, and nature activities from the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, Madison Area Herpetological Society and UW Entomology Department. Parents and friends added their talents and skills with Frisbee throwing and dog Frisbee, monogramming and working with 3D printers. Legislators came to listen to and experience the power of school libraries.

Madison4Kids sponsored programming and supplies. Lakeview Library had librarians come every week, which enabled attendees to participate in the Madison Public Library Summer Reading Program.

Thank you to the following for making the program such a success: Lindbergh families, students, PTA and community members; MMSD families and community members; Madison4Kids; Madison Public Library, Madeleine Kain and Jesse Vieau; South Central Library Board; State Senator Mark Miller; Chris Lawrence, legislative aide to State Senator Duey Stroebel; Lindbergh staff Lindsay Maglio, Nicole Quandt, Rebecca Frey, Ken Stancer, Alex Marks, Clara Elena Salinas, Que Vang and Mandy Meloy; parents/friends Michael and Laura Hughes, Sarah Shepler, Kim Varnell, Jill Varnell and Donald Propsom; and Anne Farkas.
