It takes a village: EHS appreciates partnership in STEM education success

East High School

Greetings from the East High Math Department to our community news readers. We extend our thanks to families and community groups who are supporting students of all ages in our attendance area to make progress with their education in this unusual and challenging year. We are so appreciative of ways the “village” has come together to problem-solve and to act.

We hope families are getting questions answered and are having success with home-school communication. Please continue to reach out to your teachers and schools if your students need support to do their best.

School-day volunteer tutors are still being accepted. They will go through a district-wide screening process, including a background check, and be assigned only to electronic meetings that are directly supervised by school staff.

Potential mathematics tutors should contact Achievement Connections Jack Jackson to get started with the enrollment process (jjackson@madison.k12.wi.us). Those interested in assisting with other subjects may contact Cynthia Chin (cchin@madison.k12.wi.us).

At press time, assessment of tutoring needs building wide was still ongoing, so there may be changes in the number of opportunities available by the time you make an initial inquiry.

Those seeking tutorial assistance should check directly with teachers and watch for announcements from East High regarding community agencies offering additional supports.

During our virtual learning time, MMSD will provide all high school students with graphing calculator utilities that operate on their Chromebooks. It is not yet known whether hand-held calculators will be required for Advanced Placement exams in Statistics, Calculus AB or Calculus BC. We hope to be appropriately prepared for this eventuality by exam time in May 2021.

We appreciate the community’s longstanding support of our graphing calculator supply and still welcome returns of rented calculators from the 2019-2020 school year.

Math Club, Math Modeling Team and Engineering Club hope to operate during our virtual learning time. Students may ask their math teachers for more information about how to join these groups. Engineering Club expresses appreciation in advance to the following UW-Madison partners who are working to create extracurricular STEM learning and career exploration opportunities for students this semester: Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Civil Engineering, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Engineers Without Borders and American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
