As a media organization, we wanted to share some proactive information about what may be a fraught and messy Election Day, Nov. 3.
- Those who make a concrete plan to vote are most likely to do it.
- The Nov. 3 election cannot be canceled or postponed.
- If you are going to vote in person, bring your ID.
- There may be independent election monitors at your polling place. If you have questions about their actions, please call the Voter Protection Hotline at 608-336-3232.
- If you cannot vote in person, drop off your absentee ballot at a designated site. Absentee voting is a safe and legitimate way to vote, as long as you carefully follow the requirements, including the need for a witness signature and address.
- If you feel uncertain about completing your absentee ballot correctly, attend one of the Democracy in Park events for help and witnessing by an election official (see page 14).
- If you mail your ballot, be aware that it needs to be postmarked in time to reach the City Clerk’s office by Nov. 3, pending litigation.
- We may not learn the results of the presidential election on Nov. 3 due to the high number of mail-in ballots that will need to be counted. One party or another may try to claim victory before all of the ballots are processed, but a legitimate winner cannot be determined until every vote is counted.
