Jamar Gary

I am Madison Police Department North District Detective Lieutenant Jamar Gary, and I have been in my current assignment for four months now. I am thrilled to be filling this role.

I am quite familiar with the North District having grown up on the Northside. I attended Lindbergh Elementary School, Black Hawk Middle School (then Gompers Middle) and East High School. I previously worked as a patrol sergeant in the North District as well. I have held several different assignments through the years. I was a CIS officer, detective and patrol sergeant prior to my current position.

Madison is a growing city and continues to change. Within MPD the detective bureau has also changed quite a bit, even since the time I was a detective just under 10 years ago. There are now specialized units that conduct investigations throughout the city. Those units include: Special Victims Unit (SVU), Burglary Crimes Unit (BCU) and Violent Crimes Unit (VCU).

What does this mean for you? When a report is received that falls under the purview of one of the aforementioned units, the case could be assigned to one of those units. If the case is assigned to a specialized unit, it won’t be investigated by North District detectives. However, the North District will stay apprised of updates on the case.

There are six detectives assigned to the North District — three working the day shift and three working the evening shift. North District detectives have been assigned over 145 cases from January through April in 2019. Those cases include sexual assaults, batteries, robberies, financial crimes, property crimes and death investigations.
