I hope everybody had a fun and safe summer. This summer we were busy with quality-of-life issues, but we had time to work on many of them with positive results.

One of the Madison Police Department summer interns wanted to do a neighborhood outreach project and choose the Northside. She planned an event called Earth Day on Kipling. It took place Aug. 27, which was a beautiful day. Adults and children from the Kipling Drive neighborhood, along with some officers from the North Police District, cleaned up the area and planted flowers and bushes donated by Jung Garden Center. Children painted small flower pots and planted flowers in them to take home. The pots were donated by the Northside True Value Hardware store.

Since September, Tom Scholten, who is one of the department’s crime analysts, has been assigned to our district two days a week. He is assisting in criminal investigations, problem-solving and evaluation of our projects. He is a great addition to an already great staff.

Please continue to call us if you see suspicious people or vehicles in your neighborhood. We prefer to prevent crime, instead of investigating crime.

With school back in session, be sure to slow down in school zones and drive the speed limit. We want all children to be safe going to and from school.

Have a safe and enjoyable fall.
