Come together for calculators

The 20th Annual Pi Mile Run/Walk will take place at Warner Park Saturday, May 25, with registration at 9 am and the run/walk at 10 am. Join the East math community for a nice walk or run and get a t-shirt — plus pie. Proceeds benefit the calculator rental program. (Note: Donations of used calculators are welcome anytime.) East math students will bring home information about registration. Math club advisors are now accepting donated prizes for the end-of-race drawing. Pennies add up to big changes in Ecuador

Thank you to all the East math and science students who raised hundreds of dollars in the Engineering Club’s annual February penny drive. Half the money raised will go to the UW-Madison Chapter of Engineers without Borders to support projects to construct a bridge so students can get to school and to implement a potable water system in Ecuador. The other half will help East students attend the NSBE National Convention in Detroit and LEEP Day (Latinx Exploring Engineering Professions) at UW-Madison.

May 20‒24 is STEAM Week

We are seeking guest speakers from the community to talk about how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are used throughout the Madison area. Artistic, social and political applications of mathematics are of interest, as well as technical and business uses. Contact Cynthia Chin (cchin@madison.k12.wi.us or 204-1603 ext. 41534) if you have suggestions for STEAM presentations or would like to be involved.

Congratulations to the East Math Modelling Teams

They were awarded one Honorable Mention among their four November 2018 competition entries. This places our school in the top half of 785 international entries. The highest-ranking paper featured a simulation of energy efficiency to accompany an algorithm for smart residential climate control systems. On March 1, a single team competed in the Mathworks Math Modelling Challenge. Within 14 hours, the team addressed projected use of traditional cigarettes versus e-cigarettes among American youth, and ways to quantify and rank the societal impact of four major categories of drug use (nicotine, opioids, marijuana and alcohol).

Family Engineering Night

Engineering Club joined Women in STEM to host this Feb. 20 event. We were visited by young engineers from the East area and showed a film about a group of high school students who entered and won a collegiate robotics competition. High school students enjoyed a Q&A session with UW-Madison students from many different engineering majors and student organizations.
