We love spending time outside in the winter. Our dog loves to play in the snow. What can we do to keep him safe?

Winter is a great time to be outside, but there are considerations for pet owners during snowy weather. While our pets have furry coats, their coats don’t make them immune to frostbite or hypothermia. It is important to know your dog’s tolerance for cold and adjust time outside accordingly.

If your pets begin whining, shivering, seem anxious, slow down or stop moving, seem weak, or start looking for warm places to burrow, get them back inside quickly because they are showing signs of hypothermia.

Winter’s darker days can make pets hard to see. When walking, make your pet visible by using a reflective collar or leash and/or flashing tags.

After walks, it is important to wipe down or wash your pet’s feet, legs and belly to remove any collected deicers, antifreeze or other chemicals that could be toxic. Use warm water and towel dry. Using pet-safe deicers on your driveway and sidewalks will make winter safer for your pet and others.

While you are wiping your pet down, examine her/his feet for cracked paw pads or bleeding. Ice can be as sharp as glass and damage pads or tissues between toes. To prevent ice balls from forming between toes, clip the hair between them, or use booties on your dog’s feet for wintery walks. Google “training dogs to wear boots” to find great how-to videos.

There is nothing better than watching dogs frolic in the snow. Keeping them warm, dry and visible will allow everyone to have a fun-filled winter season.
