The word community encapsulates a pretty big idea, one that can sometimes be difficult to understand when it’s used as a buzzword. Community isn’t simply a group of individuals, it’s the result of their interactions. Every potential outcome defines a community, and when its interactions are humanistic, a community focused on the value of others is cultivated.
In its initial 11 weeks, Soup’s On! has sold over $75,000 in soup—that’s over 5,600 quarts of soup enjoyed by customers plus over 600 quarts donated to Healthy Food For All Dane County. Soup’s On! has also partnered with Green Cab to provide delivery to select locations.
The extraordinary success of Soup’s On! prompted discussions on continuing sales beyond the original February end date. FEED Kitchens, Soup’s On!’s incredible venue partner, offered to continue through March 9, but are unable to commit beyond that because of the start of their busy spring season. To continue serving flavorful soups from local restaurants through April, Soup’s On! has a new venue partner: Badger Prairie Needs Network in Verona. Colin Murray, executive director of Dane Buy Local, says, “Badger Prairie Needs Network is not only an impressive facility, it fulfills the request for a west side location.”
Amy Johnson, volunteer committee member, restaurant coordinator, and representative of Soup’s On! partner Madison Essentials, says, “In true Madison fashion, we show empathy toward the plight of families, friends, neighbors, and local businesses through our words and actions. The Soup’s On! initiative is an expression of community where individuals can directly help local restaurants while enjoying some of the best soups the area has to offer.”
