Madison City Clerk’s Office

There are four elections scheduled for 2020. The City of Madison Clerk’s Office wants to make sure Madison voters have the information they need about voter registration and voter photo ID.

Voter registration

Check your voter registration at MyVote.wi.gov. Before the Spring Primary on Feb. 18, you can update your registration information online or by mail until Jan. 29. After that, registration is available in person at the City Clerk’s Office or at any in-person absentee voting location (including all Madison Public Library branches) during their operating hours until Feb. 14 at 5 pm. Registration is also available on Election Day at your polling place.

All voter registrations need to include proof of address. The name and address on the proof of address must match the name and address listed on the registration form and can be presented in electronic or paper format. Some commonly used forms of proof of address include:

  • Utility bill issued within the last 90 days
  • Bank, credit union, credit card or mortgage statement
  • Current and valid Wisconsin driver license or Wisconsin identification card
  • Paycheck
  • A government-issued document (federal, state, county, municipal, tribal, UW, Madison College or public school)

Voter Photo ID

The address listed on your photo ID does not need to show your current address, and Wisconsin driver licenses or state IDs do not need to comply with the federal REAL ID requirements. Election officials are looking at three things when you present your photo ID to vote:

  1. The type of photo ID
  2. The name on the photo ID
  3. The expiration date on the photo ID

The Dane County Voter ID Coalition provides free assistance with obtaining a free photo ID for voting purposes, including transportation to the Department of Motor Vehicles. This is a joint effort of the League of Women Voters of Dane County and the Dane County NAACP. For assistance, call 608-285-2141.
