It’s not a secret that our world changed significantly Nov. 9, 2016 — for many people it was a wake-up call to get involved and be active, for others it meant anxiety for merely existing, and others sheer fear for their livelihood. Since the 2016 presidential election, hundreds have reached out to me asking what we can do now, where can we go from here and how we can fight back. I decided to create a resource guide unique to our community, providing a menu of options for people looking to unite, engage and get to work.

Every few generations, Americans are called upon to renew and redefine the tenets of our nation, the course of our culture and the promise of our democracy. We face that calling now. I am hopeful that my Democracy 101 guide will help heed the call and will inspire folks to be engaged, informed members of our democracy and our shared future. My Democracy 101 list is by no means exhaustive and there is plenty more work to be done, but I am hopeful it serves as a good place to start. You can find a copy of my Democracy 101 guide online at legis.wisconsin.gov/assembly/48/sargent.

We all know the enormity of the challenges ahead. The road to progress is long and arduous, but we do not travel without hope. We find resilience in our enduring values, our unyielding spirit and our strength together. We have a lot of work to do, and I am glad we’re in this fight together to move Wisconsin forward.
