East Madison Community Center

The East Madison Community Center (EMCC) is pleased to open the doors for its 46th annual free summer camp serving elementary and middle school children. High school students are participating in the Junior Counselor employment training program.

The center is fortunate to have nine returning camp staff who are familiar with EMCC programs and are adapting well to change during the pandemic. Field trips are limited, but the campers have an abundance of options with recreational, educational, artistic and social skill activities.

The EMCC Community Garden is full of life with all plots utilized. Two new gardeners have taken the lead as volunteer garden leaders. Marbeli Bruno and Ronald Golden are assisting garden staff with spreading the word about safe gardening practices during COVID-19. The pandemic has been a challenge in all aspects of life, and the garden has been a welcome piece of “normal” for many gardeners.

The children’s garden and nutrition coordinator, Sarah Jacobson, has rejoined EMCC summer camp staff to provide outdoor fun for the campers. The community gardeners worked hard this past spring to prepare the garden with the hope that children would be in the garden this summer. In collaboration with Troy Garden and Rooted, the children are preparing recipes through the Veggie Pack Program using fresh produce. So far they’ve made berry cobbler, garlic scape pesto and quick pickled veggies.

The Men’s First Impressions Program is now open by appointment only. This program provides business attire, including suits, shirts, ties and possibly shoes, for men who are seeking employment and may need interview clothing. Contact EMCC at 608-249-0861 for an appointment.

Our food pantry continues to serve the community on Tuesdays from 11:30 am‒1:30 pm with a drive-up/walk-up pantry. Despite the challenging times during the pandemic, the generosity of local community groups continues to support EMCC programs and those in need. Food drives, volunteering and monetary donations continue to have a positive impact on programs and the community during this difficult time. Special thanks go out to The Rotary Club of Madison East-Monona and Old National Bank East Towne Boulevard branch.
