Summer is finally here. As we prepare to enjoy the beautiful weather, I encourage you to spend some time in your local parks. We are fortunate to have so many great parks here in Madison. Exploring nature or taking a walk through a park can be very therapeutic. With over 270 parks covering 6,000 acres, Madison Parks has a variety of outdoor activities, many of which are within walking distance of your home.

On May 4, WPCRC completed the second cohort of the Youth Police Initiative (YPI). Twenty-one WPCRC teens have completed the program. YPI creates a space for youth to ask questions to their neighborhood police officers, which improves community, promotes fellowship and improves safety. We are proud of our brave youth leaders and the North District officers for taking advantage of this opportunity to improve relationships, trust and understanding.

WPCRC was awarded a $2,500 contribution from Opportunity 34 Foundation to support WPCRC teen programs. Opportunity 34 Foundation believes every child needs an opportunity and seeks to help children who, to this point in life, maybe haven’t had the support system, relationships, financial support or family that so many college-bound children benefit from. Thank you to Kristin and Opportunity 34 Foundation for supporting Northside teens.

New this summer, WPCRC will have daily open gym for teens following MSCR Kids Camp. Teen Night will be every Friday night from July 5‒Aug. 30 and will conclude with a Back-to-School Supply Drive and Sneaker Giveaway. Family Fun Night will operate this summer June 14, July 12 and Aug. 9 from 5 pm‒8 pm. Increase the Peace will be June 28 from 6 pm‒8:30 pm.

Don’t forget to stop by the recreation center and say hello. Check out our programs and stay connected by liking our Facebook page @WarnerParkCRC.
