Big changes may lie ahead for the Cherokee Golf Course.

The course could potentially be a professional-level tournament course, but nothing is definite at this time, according to Kristen Muranji, director of business development at the Cherokee Country Club. Plans are to expand the practice area as well.

“We are still in the process of getting state Department of Natural Resources permits,” Muranji said. “That takes a month to a year.” The course would also have to meet standards of the Tournament Players Club International. “We are waiting for all that to come through,” she added.

Cherokee would remain a private country club, but rates would be subject to change. However, plans are in the works for a loyalty program that would show appreciation to current members.

A homeowners association at Cherokee has been assured they will be informed of any changes to the golf course that might affect their properties. The association was also told reconstruction of the golf course will likely be delayed until the winter of 2021-22.

Cherokee Country Club is owned by Cherokee Park Inc., headed by Dennis Tiziani, whose son-in-law Steve Stricker is a well-known professional golfer who often practices at Cherokee.
