Friends of Lakeview Library Book Sale
Friday, Dec. 13, 6:30‒7:30 pm (members only) and Saturday, Dec. 14, 9 am‒3 pm
This quarterly book sale is sponsored by The Friends of Lakeview Library. Friday is a members-only sale. You can join at the door. Bag sale is Saturday 1‒3 pm. Proceeds help fund library programs.

Children’s Programs:

Preschool Art Class with Amy Mietzel
Mondays, Dec. 2-16, 10:30‒11:15 am
(preschoolers ages 3‒5)
Experiment with mixed media, paper props, watercolors and more as we share a story and create art with local artist Amy Mietzel. Smocks or “messy” clothes recommended. 

Sewing with Kids: Ornaments
Monday, Dec. 2, 3‒4 pm
Learn a new skill, have fun and create a warm winter hat with our special guest, Elizabeth White. Participants will work with yarn and yarn needles to hand sew their own ornament, using old sweaters. All materials are provided.

Music + Movement
Wednesdays, Dec. 4‒18, 10:15‒11 am
(up to age 5, with their caregivers)
Join us for a preschool music and movement program with singing, dancing, playing and bubbles. 

Book Baby
Wednesdays, Dec. 4‒18, 11:15 am‒12 pm
Enjoy rhymes, bounces, books and songs while learning new tips and techniques to help your baby develop early literacy and math skills and naturally grow baby’s social skills in a group setting. Enjoy a short storytime then stay for play and conversation.

Cooking & Creating @ Lakeview
Thursdays, Dec. 5‒19 and Jan. 9‒30, 4‒5 pm
Creative projects, arts and crafts, cooking, games and more for school age children.

Read to a Dog
Thursday, Dec. 5, 5:30‒6:30 pm
Mondays, Dec. 16 and Jan. 27, 2:30‒3:30 pm
Bring a favorite book (or find one at the library) and read aloud to a furry friend. Call the week of to register for a 15-minute slot or simply drop in.

Early Readers Book Club
Second Mondays, Dec. 9 and Jan. 13, 3‒4 pm
Children ages 5‒9 are invited to their very own book club. We will read a book together and then do an activity or art project based on the book. Snacks will be served.

Library LEGO Club
Third Monday, Dec. 16, 3‒4 pm
Flex your engineering and design muscles and join other LEGO fans and build your own unique creation.

Family Movie Matinee
Saturdays, 2‒4 pm
Join us at the library for a full-length family movie. We’ll provide the popcorn.

Preschool Storytime

A happy blend of stories, fingerplays and songs that help preschool children develop pre-reading, early math and social skills. Daycares, groups and siblings are always welcome.

Maker Monday

(children ages 7‒12)

Dig into Maker Kit activities and explore hands-on artistic and creative tools for building, creating and playing. Flex your tinkering brain muscles with new inventions, problems and puzzles.

Minecraft Club
Tuesdays, Jan. 7‒March 31, 3:30‒5 pm
(ages 17 and under)
Grab your friends for multiplayer Minecraft fun at the library and connect to the library’s private servers for a customized gameplay experience using MinecraftEDU. No account is necessary. Sign up for 30-minute turns based on attendance. Minecraft programming is funded by a gift from the Irwin A. & Robert D. Goodman Foundation.

Bilingual Storytime

Lakeview Tabletop Adventure Club

Spies! Superheroes! Vikings! Talking sushi rolls! Join the Lakeview Tabletop Adventure Club for a night of dice-rolling, card-flipping fun. Meet new people and test your luck and your skill as you learn a new game or share one of your favorites. From quick, light party games to brain-burning challenges, we’ll have a variety of games available to try. Are you interested in Dungeons and Dragons? Come find out more information.

Madison Writing Assistance: General and Job-Related

Free one-on-one coaching sessions for writing projects of any kind. Basic computer help is also available. Call 608-246-4547 in advance to sign up for a one-hour session. Madison Writing Assistance is a free service provided by the UW-Madison Writing Center and is made possible through the generous support of The Evjue Foundation, the UW Anonymous Fund, Altrusa International of Madison and the UW-Madison Writing Center.

Chocolate Truffles

Local baker Punky Eagan will demonstrate how quick and easy truffles are to make for the upcoming holidays. Sample an assortment of flavors. Two identical classes limited to 14 participants each; register beginning Nov. 20.

Holiday Garlands and Gift Tags

Use fanciful papers, decorative edge scissors, paper punches, vintage ephemera, rubber stamps, washi tape, glitter, twinkling watercolors and hand lettering to create unique garlands and gift tags to deck the halls and your gifts this holiday season. Sachi Komai of Anthology will supply everything you need. Registration begins Nov 21.

AARP Smart Driver Course
Saturday, Dec. 7, 12‒4 pm
Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions and the roads you travel every day. Even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. The AARP Smart Driver Course, offered by AARP Driver Safety, is the nation’s largest driver safety course and is designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. There is no cost for participants, but space is limited, so register beginning Nov. 23.

From the Garden: Herbal Gift-Making
Monday, Dec. 16, 5‒7:30 pm
Join herbalist Linda Conroy for this hands-on class. You will make eight or more herbal gift items that you can gift or keep for yourself. Make a different gift at each station. Learn about the variety of herbs offered and select herbs that resonate with you. All supplies and decorative packaging are included. Register beginning Dec. 2.

Internet Security with Cris Carpenter

Internet threats can take a variety of forms and most of them are intended to extract sensitive information from your computer and/or money from your accounts. Learn to protect your computer, personal information and accounts by recognizing common threats, utilizing effective security software and employing safe web browsing and emailing practices.

Hoarding Disorder Presentation
Tuesday, Jan. 21, 6:30‒7:30 pm
Join Margo Nelson, a psychotherapist and owner of Courage Counseling where she specializes in hoarding disorder, trauma, depression, anxiety, OCD and grief, including pet grief. Margo will talk about some of the underlying causes of the hoarding disorder, and why the reality television shows on people who have hoarding disorder are a manual in what not to do. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Learning with Chef Paul: Knife Skills and Safety
Thursday, Jan. 23, 6‒7:30 pm
Once your knife skills have improved, your cooking will be more efficient and more delicious. Join Chef Paul for a demonstration on how to dice, julienne and chiffonade vegetables and fruits. Chef Paul will also discuss how to choose, care for and sharpen knives. Register beginning Jan. 9.

Wild Food/Wild Medicine through the Seasons: A Virtual Plant Walk
Monday, Jan. 27, 5:30‒7:30 pm
Join herbalist and forager Linda Conroy, who will lead the class on a virtual tour of the flora of Wisconsin, focusing on the plants that can be foraged for food and medicine during each season. Suggestions for how to prepare the plants and how to incorporate them in your kitchen and apothecary will be shared. The class will conclude with an herbal drink as well as herbal/wild food snacks. Register beginning Jan. 13.
