Quarterly Book Sale
The Friends of Lakeview Library Quarterly Book Sale is Saturday, Sept. 21, 9 am‒3 pm, with a members-only sale Friday, Sept. 20, 6‒7:45 pm, and a Saturday bag sale 1‒3 pm. All proceeds fund library programs. Children may choose one free book.

Summer Reading Club
June 1‒Aug. 31 (for children ages birth‒12)
Visit any Madison Public Library or register online. Join us on a brain-building reading adventure this summer. Fill out your bingo card and earn a free book of your choice and an invitation to our Choose Your Own Adventure, Starring You! comic making party. This is a special Bubbler Jr. making experience just for summer readers.

Read Like a Badger Summer Reading Club Concert and Picnic
Tuesday, Aug. 6, 6‒8 pm
Pack up your supper and head to Olbrich Gardens, 3330 Atwood Ave., for a fun-filled family concert, rain or shine. Come at 6 pm to play with bubbles and make a project with Olbrich Gardens staff. At 7 pm, Angela Puerta will get your toes tapping while you munch. Sponsored by Overture Center for the Arts Kids in the Rotunda and Olbrich Gardens. 

Terrific Tuesdays
Tuesdays, Aug. 6‒20, 4‒5 pm
Join us every Tuesday for all sorts of creative projects. There will be arts and crafts, cooking, games and more.

Pop-up Puppet Theatre

Head to the library for silly stories and puppet fun.

Choose Your Own Adventure Story, Starring You!
Tuesday, Aug. 20, 4‒6 pm
Complete your summer reading bingo card and earn your Golden Ticket to attend this special end of summer celebration. Explore green screen and digital comic making technology to transport yourself to imaginary worlds or interplanetary adventures. Incorporate your own drawings or a beloved picture book to be a character in your favorite story. Each participant will receive a print and digital copy of your comic story to share. All ages are welcome. Children under 7 should be accompanied by an adult.

Library LEGO Club
Tuesday, Aug. 27, 4 pm; Monday, Sept. 16, 3-4 pm
Flex your engineering and design muscles and join other LEGO fans and build your own unique creation. (Note: LEGOs are the featured Terrific Tuesday activity on this date.) 

Family Movie Matinee “Wonder Park”
Saturday, Aug. 24, 2 pm
Join us at the library for a full-length family movie. We’ll provide the popcorn. Wonder Park tells the story of an amusement park where the imagination of a wildly creative girl named June comes alive. This film is rated PG. 

Book Baby

Enjoy rhymes, bounces, books and songs while learning tips and techniques to help your baby develop early literacy and math skills, and naturally growing baby’s social skills in a group setting at the same time. Come for a short storytime, stay for play and conversation.

Toddler Time
Wednesdays, Aug. 7, 14, Sept. 11, 25, 10:15 am (for children ages 16‒35 months)
Enjoy rhymes, books and songs while learning tips and techniques to help your toddler develop early literacy and math skills, and naturally growing social skills in a group setting at the same time. One adult per child is recommended. Please note: class size may be limited.

Preschool Storytime
Mondays, Aug. 5, 12, Sept. 16, 23, 30, 10:30 am (for children ages 3‒5, siblings welcome)
A happy blend of stories, fingerplays and songs that help preschool children develop print and phonological awareness, vocabulary, letter knowledge and narrative skills. Groups are welcome. No registration is required.

Panels + Pizza: A graphic novel discussion club
Monday, Aug. 26, 5‒6 pm (for children ages 10‒13)
Join your peers for a monthly meet-up to read and discuss graphic novels. We’ll be talking about old favorites, reading new titles and doing occasional activities around them. Pizza will be served.

Minecraft Club
Thursday, Aug. 1, 2‒4 pm
Grab your friends for multiplayer Minecraft fun at the library and connect to the library’s private servers for a customized gameplay experience using MinecraftEDU. We’ll work on challenges together and have time for free play. No account is necessary. Sign up for 30-minute turns based on attendance.

Read to a Dog

Bring a favorite book (or find one at the library) and read aloud to a furry friend. Call the week of to register for a 15-minute slot or simply drop in.

Maker Monday

Dig in to Maker Kit activities and explore hands-on artistic and creative tools for building, creating and playing. Flex your tinkering brain muscles with new inventions, problems and puzzles. Check online or call the library for this week’s activity.

Adult Programs:

Summer Herbal Medicine/Wild Edible Walk
Thursday, Aug. 8, 5–7:30 pm
Join herbalist and forager Linda Conroy to explore the wild plants that grow around us. We will learn about common and uncommon wild plants that can be used for food and medicine. Identification techniques, as well as ways to prepare plants for optimal nutrition and healing, will be discussed. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. Meet at Lakeview Library for herbal refreshments; the tour leaves promptly at 5:30 pm. Ages 8 and older; adult supervision required. Registration begins July 25.

Cookbook Book Club — Salads
Tuesday, Aug. 13, 6‒7 pm
Choose a recipe from our cookbook display or use your own recipe and make a salad using produce you have grown with seeds from the Lakeview Seed Library. Or make a salad with produce you have grown or purchased. Cookbooks will be on display Aug. 1. Lakeview Library and Willy Street Co-op will provide tableware, salad dressing, bread and refreshments.

Movie Night “Captain Marvel”

Captain Marvel is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls. Rated PG-13. Light refreshments will be served.

CarFit
Thursday, Sept. 5, 6:30 pm
CarFit is an educational program that offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them. The program also provides information and materials on community-specific resources that could enhance their safety as drivers and/or increase their mobility in the community. Registration begins Aug. 22.

Movie Night “The Public”
Friday, Sept. 13, 5:45 pm
A bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library. Some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an “Occupy” sit in. This story tackles some of our nation’s most challenging issues, homelessness and mental illness, and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library.

Hand Lettering
Sept. 24, 5:30‒7:30 pm
Learn creative lettering styles as well as drawing and painting techniques. Bring a favorite name, word, phrase, motto or song lyric to illustrate. Sketch out your idea and transfer it onto 9”x12” Bristol so you can add pen and ink, watercolor and cut paper collage. Use the skills you learn to embellish journals, greeting cards, envelopes, place cards and desk and door signs. Registration begins Sept. 10.

Community Volunteer Opportunity Workshop
Thursday, Sept. 26, 6:30 pm
Learn about volunteering for driver safety programs. Whether you like to teach, provide technology assistance or help with community outreach, there’s a spot for you. The workshop will include information about volunteering for the AARP Safe Driver course, We Need to Talk and CarFit.

One-On-One Writing Assistance
Mondays, 4–7 pm
Free one-hour sessions for writing help, including resumes, cover letters, online job searches, applications and any creative writing. This program is funded through a grant and staffed by UW Writing Assistance staff. Call 246-4547 to sign up.

Computer and eBook Assistance
Wednesdays, 5:30‒7:30 pm, and Saturdays, 9–11 am, by appointment
We offer free one-on-one sessions for help with basic computer and internet literacy, including online job searching and applications, using email and Facebook, and e-reader set-up and assistance. Call 246-4547 to make an appointment.
