June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Honor victims by becoming informed about one of the most overlooked public health issues in the United States. Elder abuse is a violation of human rights and a significant cause of illness, injury, loss of productivity, isolation and despair. In 2018 Dane County Department of Human Services investigated 479 cases of elder abuse, neglect and exploitation. And while this number seems large, it captures only a portion of abuse, as it is estimated that only 1 in 23 cases are reported.

Dane County offers numerous events during the week prior to World Elder Abuse Awareness Day to bring awareness to our community. Events will include media outreach, community presentations and legislative advocacy.

Pellitteri Waste Systems is hosting a free Senior Safety Shredfest Thursday, June 13, 1‒2 pm, at Northside TownCenter. Everyone is invited to prevent financial exploitation and protect personal information by shredding it.

Dane County is proud to work in partnership with many public and private entities to provide compassionate and competent response to all reports of elder abuse and exploitation. If you are concerned about an elder, call the Dane County Adult-at-Risk Helpline at 608-261-9933.
