Sherman Neighborhood Association Safety Meeting
On Oct. 22, members of the North Police District met with the Sherman Neighborhood Association regarding rising concerns of crime in the area. The neighborhood has experienced a disturbing trend of burglaries and robberies in the last couple of months. This has created a sense of fear with residents.

There were suggestions of increased lighting, both on private property and streets. Many residents have installed alarm systems and some have purchased security cameras. There was discussion of people walking with neighbors as observers for the neighborhood, as well as a concerted effort to report suspicious behavior. Neighbors also raised concerns about pedestrian traffic near area schools and speeding vehicles cutting through the neighborhood to get from Packers Avenue to North Sherman Avenue.

The North Police District is committed to working with the neighborhood to ease fear and reduce crime in the area. The Traffic Enforcement Team will do some traffic enforcement in the area. We have also asked patrol officers to provide high-visibility patrols as time permits by passing through the neighborhood while on their way to calls or when they have unobligated time. The District will continue to work with the Burglary Unit, Violent Crime Unit and the Drug Task Force, all of whom play a role in MPD’s response to the crimes that have been occurring in the neighborhood. We will also work with landlords to encourage involvement in neighborhood issues that arise from their properties.

We look forward to ongoing discussions and appreciate the Sherman Neighborhood Association’s invitation to meet the neighbors we serve.
