An unfortunate crime trend that appears to be continuing into the new year is the theft of property from vehicles and the theft of vehicles. The increase in number of stolen autos is taking place throughout the city and surrounding communities.

The property thefts and stolen vehicles are primarily crimes of opportunity. Suspects check unlocked car doors to gain access to vehicles and then look for valuables, including keys and garage door openers. Cars are being targeted in all locations, including driveways, open or unlocked garages, on-street parking, as well as parking lots of apartment complexes and shopping centers.

Here are a few tips to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of property or car theft:

Lock your car, home and garage at all times, even when you are home.

Never leave your car running unoccupied.

Do not leave spare keys or key fobs in your vehicle.

Do not store valuables in your vehicle.

Please immediately report any suspicious activity, particularly persons randomly attempting to open doors of multiple cars.
