Property crime trends
Burglary, auto theft and thefts from autos are primarily crimes of opportunity throughout the City of Madison. A few simple steps can greatly reduce the odds of you finding yourself the victim of a property crime.

  • Keep your garage doors closed and locked.
  • Lock your house doors at all times, whether home or away.
  • Lock your car and do not leave any valuables in your vehicle. Do not leave your car running unattended or leave a spare key inside the car.

Property crime trends in the North Police District are similar to trends citywide. Reported burglary has increased approximately 5 percent this year citywide. There were 539 reported burglaries through July 2018 compared to 515 last year. There have been 62 burglaries reported in the North District in 2018.

Auto theft has slightly increased by 1.5 percent this year citywide, with 195 vehicles reported as stolen in 2018 compared to 192 through July of the previous year. A remarkable statistic is that 34 of the 38 cars stolen in July had the keys in them, and 36 of the 38 cars stolen in June had keys left inside the car. There have been 38 cars stolen in the North District through July of 2018.

There is some good news in terms of thefts from vehicles, with an approximate 19 percent decrease in reported thefts from vehicles in 2018. There were 605 reported thefts from autos citywide, with 84 of those thefts taking place in the North District.

Lock your house, garage and cars at all times and stay safe.
