Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin (SCWI) is once again collaborating with art students from Malcolm Shabazz City High School. One year ago, community members gathered at Goodwill Northside to witness the unveiling of a mural created by the students especially for the Goodwill Northside Community Room. The retail store/donation center at 2901 N. Sherman Ave. opened to hundreds of eager shoppers in September 2017.

Since that time, the store’s community room has been warmly embraced by the neighborhood. Shabazz art teacher Rachel Schramm is ready to populate the community room with additional art, at least temporarily. Schramm and her students selected the location for a curated final farewell show, “Back to the Chalkboard: What does it mean to be done?” for soon-to-be Shabazz graduates. The show will feature artwork from their time as students.

Students selected “Back to the Chalkboard” as the theme of the show because of their interest in showcasing and exploring themes of growth and artistic process in student work. Now that students are about to graduate, they wanted to explore what it means to be at the end and how they’ve grown as artists.

The opening reception and viewing event will be held Friday, May 31, from 6‒8 pm.

Goodwill SCWI retail stores exist as the economic drivers for Goodwill’s mission services, providing career guidance, supported employment and residential services to people with disabilities, mental health concerns and other barriers to employment and independent living. Goodwill SCWI is a local nonprofit operating 11 retail stores and 12 donation centers to serve residents within a 14-county region. Each region is an independent 501(c)(3) organization.
