This summer, I had the pleasure of mentoring an intern named Nia, a local high school student who moved to Madison from Maine. She participated in the Wanda Fullmore Internship Program through the City of Madison. The internship program places high school students into paid internships across city departments to learn about city jobs and gain valuable work experience. Nia helped plan our Teen Nights, worked at the front desk, taught art classes for Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR) Kids Kamp, and went on field trips throughout Madison Parks facilities. Nia did an excellent job, and we wish her the best as she enters her junior year.

Warner Park Community Recreation Center (WPCRC) will be collecting back-to-school supplies from Aug. 1‒22. Support Northside students by donating a backpack with school supplies. Donations will be distributed at the Mendota Elementary Block Party Aug. 24 and at the JP Hair Design Back-to-School Free Haircuts event Aug. 25. Please drop off supplies in designated barrels at WPCRC.

WPCRC is celebrating its 20th birthday. Since opening for business Sept. 19, 1999, the WPCRC has established itself as a critical resource for the Northside. Through partnerships with MSCR and NewBridge (formerly NESCO), WPCRC offers recreational, educational and cultural activities and events.

The celebration will include a full day of activities, kicking off with a Recognition Brunch and free fitness classes offered by MSCR, and culminating with the 20th Anniversary “Party Like Its 1999” DJ dance party. Limited edition 20th anniversary merchandise will be for sale. The date of the celebration is still to be announced, so be on the lookout for more information.

Don’t forget to stop by the recreation center and say hello. Check out programs at the WPCRC and stay connected by liking our Facebook page @WarnerParkCRC.
