Winter tips for senior adults, family members, neighbors
Jim Krueger, NESCO Executive Director

The winter cold, snow and ice are difficult for senior adults. Here are a few tips to help keep them safe this winter.

  1. Avoid falls. Wear appropriate shoes outdoors. Salt or sand your sidewalks and driveways. Ask neighbors or relatives for assistance with shoveling and errands.
  2. Find someone to shovel your snow. Cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict, which increases the risk of heart attack for the elderly.
  3. Exercise indoors. Daily stretching exercises help maintain flexibility. Walk in place or work out with a fitness video.
  4. Dress properly for cold weather. Without proper winter clothing, a person can quickly fall victim to frostbite or hypothermia.
  5. Keep home temperatures above 65 degrees and dress in layers to maintain body temperature. Tight clothes can restrict blood flow. If you can’t pay the heating bill, contact your gas or electric utility for assistance. Keep extra blankets on the bed to keep warm at night.
  6. If you heat your home with a fireplace or gas furnace, buy a carbon monoxide detector ($30). Carbon monoxide in the air can cause headache, dizziness, nausea and even death.
  7. Make sure you are eating enough and eating healthy; burning calories generates body heat.
  8. If the tips on your cane or walker are worn, have them replaced. They can be slippery on snow and ice and cause falls.
  9. Spend time with elderly family, friends and neighbors or call them regularly during the winter months.
  10. Check on the seniors living next to you. Take a few minutes each day or week to make sure your elderly neighbors or family members stay safe.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from all of us at NESCO.
