East High School

In addition to their classroom studies, East High School (EHS) area students are encouraged to participate in the many extracurricular events involving Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM).

As you read this, the Engineering Club is on a trip to the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Fall Regional Conference, with practicing engineers, college students and K-12 students from throughout the Midwest. The conference offers two days of competition, college visits, pre-professional workshops and interviews with corporate recruiters. Thanks to the UW-Madison NSBE chapter and EHS Engineering Club supporters for making this trip possible. Watch for announcements of future events hosted by NSBE or the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Some in-house club projects are in progress at EHS, including a hover chair and shoreline restoration devices for Cherokee Marsh.

This fall’s Mathematical Modeling Competition has concluded. Six teams from EHS participated in this 36-hour international creative mathematics and technical writing exercise. To see the 2017 problems, visit comap.com/highschool/contests/himcm/index.html after Nov. 20. We anticipate results from the contest judges in February.

February and March will offer another opportunity to compete in the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) modeling challenge. See Ms. Chin for more information.

Our next traditional math meet will take place Wednesday, Dec. 6, at Memorial High School. The West High School math meet takes place Feb. 21, and we defend our home turf on Pi Day, March 14. Ask your math teacher for a permission slip. All EHS students are eligible to compete. Have fun representing your school in this algebra-geometry-probability-logic challenge. Join Math Club to prepare with the rest of the team. See Mr. Galarowicz or Ms. Paschke at lunch on Fridays, Room 3011/3012.

Women in STEM is now co-advised by Mr. Arnold and Ms. DeJongh, but students are the true leaders. Come find out what is in store for the winter of 2017-18 Wednesdays, at lunch, Room 3003.

The UW-Madison Mathematics Department offers hands-on enrichment activity sessions Monday nights at 6 pm. These sessions are suitable for any student enrolled in first-year algebra or beyond. EHS students have already enjoyed presentations on game theory, re-imagined geometries and orders of infinity this semester. Visit math.wisc.edu/wiki/index.php/Madison_Math_Circle.

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences held an informational meeting in October to inform students about their ability to participate in the World Food Prize Youth Institute. Participating students are mentored by UW graduate students and faculty to produce a short research paper on a food access/food safety/food justice issue, either in a developing country or in a vulnerable community within a developed country. Selected papers are presented at a statewide conference in April. See Ms. Chin if this opportunity excites you. Visit worldfoodprize.org/index.cfmnodeID=87727&audienceID=1.
