Happy Summer, Northsiders! I hope you’ve been able to get out and enjoy the wide range of natural spaces in our neighborhoods. We are fortunate to live amidst such abundance.

The Warner Beach House is slated for reconstruction in 2019 and has been funded in the City’s 2019 Capital Budget. Despite the beautiful artwork on the exterior that was installed recently, it is in poor structural condition.

In anticipation of this project and in furtherance of their goal of getting more people out on the lakes, the Clean Lakes Alliance has initiated the “Reimagining Warner Beach” design contest.

The contest is open to individuals or teams of professionals or other interested parties. The registration deadline for contestants is in September and the final submission deadline is in November.

Submissions will be judged on four design goals: improved water quality, improved sustainability, improved access, improved placemaking.

Visit the contest page at www.cleanlakesalliance.org to learn more and register to participate. Winners will be eligible for one of the $10,000, $4,000, or $1,000 top prizes. I hope that local residents and community groups will take on this challenge!

Beginning in 2018 the Parks Department will initiate the public engagement and planning process for the Beach House project. Whether or not you participate in the Clean Lakes Alliance contest, there will be ample opportunity for your ideas and concerns to be discussed and addressed in this process.

I’ve already heard some good, common sense ideas from residents, including improving access to the beach from the sidewalk on Woodward and constructing a pier at the north end of the beach so that swimmers can more easily access the deeper, cooler water.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi has said that the County’s new filtration system that keeps blue green algae, E. coli and other particulates away from beaches will be deployed at Warner Beach either later this year or next year.

Correction: The previous issue lists Charlie Romines as the Parks Department contact for concerns about terrace trees. The correct contact information for these concerns is (608) 266-4816 from 7 am-3 pm on weekdays and 911 for after hour emergencies.
