Northside Community Council to launch Oct. 19

The Northside Planning Council (NPC) is excited to announce the launch of the Northside Community Council (NCC), a representative body made up of Northside organizations. The first meeting will be held at 6 pm on Thursday, Oct. 19 at Warner Park Community Recreation Center (WPCRC).

For more than 15 years, NPC’s board of directors served as a sort of community council, comprised of official representatives from neighborhood associations, the business association, faith communities, and other Northside groups. Monthly board meetings served as a clearinghouse of information, and, often, as an organizing platform for collective action. That board structure allowed NPC to facilitate a variety of achievements for the Northside: the construction of WPCRC, the establishment of Troy Gardens, the founding of the Northside Farmers Market, the expansion of Lakeview Branch Library, and the publication of this newspaper, among others. At one point, NPC’s board was made up of 36 members.

In 2010, as NPC considered building the FEED Kitchens, this representative board structure was abandoned in favor of a more traditional board of directors. In the years since, we’ve heard over and over that Northsiders miss the opportunity to learn about happenings and emerging issues from every corner of the community.  As an organization that’s working to build relational and leadership capacity on the Northside, NPC misses that monthly opportunity, too, and we’d like to facilitate that structure through the NCC.

If you help organize a Northside group, you’ll be getting an invitation from us soon, but please do contact Abha at 230-1221 to get involved.
