During the months of March and April the NorthSide Artists Group (NSAG) will hold their spring exhibit at Manna Cafe, 611 N. Sherman Ave.

On display will be a variety of creations by NSAG members, including photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media and more, with many for sale. The inspiration for some of the photographs in the show occurred during summer vacations in places like Eagle River, an island off the Door Peninsula or Madison’s sister-city in Cuba.

“Reflection,” photo on canvas by Susan Hoffman

About her photograph, Susan Hoffman shared, “I took the photograph ‘Reflections’ during a stay at Arbutus Lake near Eagle River. Sitting by the lake bathed in morning sunlight, I sketched and began a book for children while my husband fished. In the evening we paddled there, serenaded by the resident loon. I believe the image captured this nurturing and transformative experience for others to enjoy and contemplate.”

Wendy Murkve’s “Light and Shadow” photo was taken in the magnificent boat house at Rock Island State Park, off the Door Peninsula, during an annual camping trip there. “I noticed this pattern of light from the decking above, and the lake levels were so high that water was all over the floor. I had to be there at the right time for the sunlight to be showing through the decking and onto the floor below, and, of course, the weather had to be just right,” said Wendy.

“Think Spring,” painting by
Linda Boxrucker

The paintings in the exhibit will include Linda Boxrucker’s watercolor of tulips titled “Think Spring.” According to Linda, “Tulips have always been one of my favorite flowers. The colors, shapes, and the fact that they are one of the first flowers we see in spring made me want to paint them. I love how the colors run into each other and form their own character making the tulip distinctively individual.”

These artworks and many others will be in Manna Cafe’s fireplace room and may be seen during regular business hours: Monday‒Friday, 6 am‒6 pm; Saturday‒Sunday, 7 am‒2 pm (MannaCafe.com).

Founded in 2005, the NorthSide Artist Group currently has approximately 40 members and is open to anyone on the Northside who loves to make art. Our plans for 2018 include a summer exhibit at Lakeview Library, picnic, fall exhibit at Warner Park, annual end-of-year meeting and possible other events as the year unfolds.
