I work very closely with Dane County, but still discover new and amazing programs that are offered.

Last month, I attended a Public Health Fair and learned about the Nurse-Family Partnership Program. The goal of this program is to connect pregnant women to services available in our area. Data proves that women who participate in programs like this one tend to have healthier pregnancies, improved health and development of the child, and increased economic self-sufficiency for the family.

The Nurse-Family Partnership Program is a free service for women who qualify. Some of the eligibility requirements include living in Dane County, being a first-time mom, meeting low-income standards, and having an interest in meeting regularly with a home nurse. For complete information, please visit www.nursefamilypartnership.org or call 266-4821.

Women who participate in this program are matched with a nurse from the Public Health Department. They meet regularly throughout the pregnancy and continue on until the child is 2 years old. Fathers, family and friends are also welcome to participate in the visits. The nurse supports the new mom with pregnancy concerns as well as preparing for the baby to arrive. Connections to health care, child care, continuing education and job training may all be explored, depending on the needs and goals of the mother. Both short-term and long-term goals are addressed.

I am so proud that Dane County offers programs like this one. Supporting new families is among the most important things we can do to make our community healthier and stronger.
