Carp are an invasive species here in Wisconsin. They live in many of our waters in Dane County. They breed rapidly and can overtake a body of water quickly. In recent years, they have been causing great harm to the Cherokee Marsh.

Carp feed on the bottom of the lake. They stir up nutrients and muddy the water. Phosphorous settles in this sediment, so it is also disturbed. Vegetation is harmed. Habitat is destroyed for species that require clear water and vegetation.

The Friends of Cherokee Marsh partner with the Dane County Land and Water Resources Department to protect the water. One effort involved hiring a company that removes carp from the marsh. Many thousands of pounds of carp have been removed over several years.

While there is still much work to do, the great news is that Cherokee Marsh is showing improvements in its water quality. Native plants are returning and the water is much more clear and healthy. Currently, there are no longer enough carp in the water to harvest. Our efforts are making a positive difference.

I am grateful for the efforts of the Friends of Cherokee Marsh for their passion, dedication and expertise in protecting one of our most valuable Northside treasures. Learn more about their efforts online at cherokeemarsh.org.
