This is the time of year we slow down and give thanks.

I am blessed to have so many things to be thankful for: a wonderful family, loving friends and a career that allows me to serve the public. Today I’d like to write about something that we should all be thankful for, the beautiful state of Wisconsin.

Wisconsin is woven into my DNA. I can no more separate myself from it than I can from the color of my eyes. It is part of who I am. Growing up in Madison, I can remember every cold winter walk to school, every scorching summer day and every crisp fall night.

What I remember most about those formative years is the support of my community. My family didn’t have much. I was a free and reduced lunch kid and I can’t remember ever receiving a new pair of jeans (with the tags on) that I wanted so badly. While times were tough, the people who surrounded me lifted me up and showed me that I could dream and dream big.

We are a state in which friends and neighbors help elderly neighbors by mowing their lawn. We bring casseroles to families with newborn babies. We join the PTO and our neighborhood association because we care about each other. We know that when we do better, we all do better.

I could go on and on about Wisconsin’s natural beauty, or about our progressive history, or the Packers. Instead, I’d like to pause and give thanks for our people and our sense of community that ties us all so strongly together.

In Wisconsin, it is true that regardless of who you support for governor or president, we all come from this wonderful place that we should be thankful to call home.
