With the Nov. 8 General Election quickly approaching, it is important to be up to date on voting law changes.

In a 119-page decision at the end of July, U.S. District Judge James Peterson struck down parts of Wisconsin’s voter ID law, limits on early voting, residency rules and much more. This was a giant step forward in reinstating and reaffirming the rights of voters in Wisconsin. There have been an unconscionable number of changes to election law since Governor Walker took office and it is time to right the ship.

Important portions of the decision to note for Election Day include striking down the 28-day residency rule as unconstitutional. This restores the previous 10-day residency requirement. Expired student IDs are now acceptable forms of photo ID for voting; however, UW-Madison students will still need an additional photo ID to fulfill the requirement. The decision removed limits on absentee voting for municipalities, allowing local communities to once again set their own hours, including weekends in some cases, and have multiple locations for early in-person absentee voting. This restores the local control to clerks and municipalities that had been unceremoniously ripped away. You can contact your municipal clerk’s office to find out local hours.

It is important to note that voter ID is still in effect for the Nov. 8 General Election. To ensure you have what you need to vote, please check out BringIt.Wisconsin.gov.
