Madison Family Doulas, a local postpartum and infant care agency, delivered over 2,700 disposable diapers to The Road Home following a successful diaper drive held in February.

Michelle Ellinger, owner and longtime Northside Madison resident, decided to organize the drive after learning more about how common the need for diapers is. “One in three families struggle to afford diapers for their children. This isn’t a need that’s covered by any government programs. Here in Dane County, we do not have many options,” Ellinger explained.

She chose The Road Home of Dane County as recipient of the donations because of who they serve. “These are families who need the community to step in and help. They are homeless or highly mobile, and they have young children. It’s literally a matter of buying diapers or paying to keep the lights on, buying diapers or affording bus fare to get to their employment. It’s helping to break a cycle and get them back on their feet,” said Ellinger.

This year’s drive had drop-offs in Mount Horeb, Madison, Monona and Cottage Grove. Ellinger said she’s already thinking ahead to next year and hopes to expand the drive to twice as many locations. “I’m already hearing from businesses about how they can be a part of it. We will most definitely be making this an annual event,” she said.
