Mrs. Beverly S. Hill-Holmes was born in Madison, Wis. Jan. 20, 1935 and graduated from Madison Central High School and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her grandfather, Edwin J.W. Hill, operated the historic Hill’s Grocery store at Dayton and Blount streets in Madison’s first African-American neighborhood. Beverly Holmes held a very successful career as an award-winning teacher in Milwaukee Public Schools for more than 33 years, during which time she was an award-winning athletics coach in tennis, volleyball, basketball and track and field. Mrs. Holmes was the first female athletic director and the first female state track champion coach at Rufus King High school in Milwaukee, as well as the first female and first African-American female coach from Milwaukee to be inducted into the Wisconsin Track and Field Coach’s Association Hall of Fame in 2007.

Mr. Albert M. Holmes, husband of Mrs. Holmes, is a champion coach in his own right. Mr. Holmes was 49 years a high school coach, winning more than 10 state championships, mostly in track and field, basketball and football. He also served as the vice president of the Center for Veterans Issues and was in charge of veterans housing throughout Wisconsin. Mr. Holmes was an administrator in Milwaukee Public Schools and served the city in multiple capacities: as a member of the board of directors of the Social Development Commission, Felmer’s Chaney Correctional Center Community Advisory Board, Milwaukee Sewerage Commission Board, NAACP Executive Board (veteran’s representative), Sports Director, African World Festival and as the first minority representative to the Wisconsin Track and Field Coach’s Association Board of Directors. Mr. Holmes is an honorably discharged U.S. Air Force Vietnam veteran who served at Truax Field more than 50 years ago.

Mr. Holmes is co-founder and current president/CEO of Milwaukee social service agency, My Father’s House, Inc., working with non-custodial parents (mostly fathers), to keep them involved in their children’s lives, especially when they don’t live in the same home.

Following the loss in 2016 of her only son and her only brother 90 days later, Mr. Holmes decided to bring Mrs. Holmes home to Madison to afford her more time to spend with her last living child.

We are happy they have chosen to live on the north east side of Madison and we welcome them to Madison!
