I hope everyone is having a fun summer.

Many of you are aware that Madison is seeing an increase in violence with firearms. The Northside also has seen this increase with two homicides and a number of shots-fired incidents. Both homicides have been solved and the individuals involved have been arrested. A number of arrests have been made in the shots-fired incidents.

It is great to see other agencies and community members getting involved to prevent these types of incidents from occurring in the future, because I don’t believe we can arrest our way out of this issue.

It is not all bad news. The Northside has seen a 20 percent drop in theft from auto cases, which is due in large part to the community doing things that can prevent this crime from occurring, like locking car doors and not keeping valuables in the car.

I have also had contact with many community members through neighborhood meetings, cookouts and “coffee with a cop,” which meets every third Thursday at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center.

This summer North District staff has started a kickball league called “Kickin’ with Cops.” League teams are made up of children from different Northside neighborhoods, recruited and coached by officers. Everybody is having a great time.

It is important for us to deal with problems and issues when they are small and manageable so do not hesitate to call us when you see or hear of a problem or issue. The non-emergency phone number is 266-4275 (hit number 6 when the phone tree starts).

I hope the rest of your summer is safe and fun.
