Boy Scout Troop 127 on Madison’s Northside recognized its newest Eagle Scout Oct. 28 at the Warner Park Community Recreation Center. Garrett Smyth earned scouting’s highest honor after 11 years of learning and adventure, first with Cub Scout Pack 127 and then with Boy Scout Troop 127.

Garrett joined scouts at the age of seven, spending first through fifth grades involved with Cub Scout Pack 127. He ultimately earned the Arrow of Light award, indicating preparedness for Boy Scouts and the only Cub Scout award worn on the Boy Scout uniform.

During his time in Boy Scouts, Garrett earned 26 merit badges covering topics as diverse as Citizenship in the Community, Nuclear Science, Hiking, Family Life and Snow Sports. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, scouting’s honor society, nominated by his fellow scouts. In addition to earning the rank of Eagle Scout, Garrett earned a Bronze Palm for work beyond the requirements for Eagle Scout.

It wasn’t all work. There were also fantastic adventures, beyond local outings like snowboarding and summer camp. Garrett spent a week in 2014 on a backcountry trek in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and a week in 2016 on a sea kayaking high adventure in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

In the summer of 2017, Garrett completed a leadership project as the final requirement to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. He led adults and his fellow Troop 127 Scouts in the construction of a ceremonial fire pit for U.S. flag retirements at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8483. VFW leaders were generous and supportive partners in this project.

Do you know a young person who would benefit from all that scouting has to offer? Madison’s Northside is fortunate to have active, well-run units with trained, committed leaders for youth of all ages. If you’re interested, keep an eye on the Northside News for regular information on Pack 127 (elementary school) and Troop 127 (middle and high school).
