The Friends of Lakeview Branch Library hold their next Quarterly Book Sale on Saturday, March 17, 9 am‒4 pm, with a members-only sale on Friday, March 16, 6‒7:45 pm, and a Saturday bag sale 2‒4 pm. There are always great bargains and all proceeds fund library programs.

Minecraft Club

Grab your friends for multiplayer Minecraft fun at the library. Sign up for 30-minute turns based on attendance. No account is necessary. Bring your own computer or use one of ours.

Baby Gym

Drop-in Preschool Storytime

A happy blend of stories, fingerplays and songs that help preschool children develop print and phonologic awareness, vocabulary, letter knowledge and narrative skills. Groups are welcome; no registration is required.

Tabletop Game Club
Saturday, Feb. 10, 2 pm
(children in grades K-12)
Bring some friends or join other kids for chess, checkers and other tabletop games. Play our games or bring your favorite one to share. Children under age 7 must be accompanied by an adult. No registration is required. Drop-in and stay as long as you like.

Library LEGO Club

LEGO Buildathon

Panels and Pizza: A Graphic Novel Discussion Group

Join your peers for a monthly meet-up (the fourth Wednesday of each month) to read and discuss graphic novels. We’ll be talking about old favorites, reading new titles and doing occasional activities around them. Pizza will be served. Etegami
Monday, Feb. 26, 6‒7:30 pm
(ages 12 to adult)
Etegami is a Japanese folk art that translates “picture letter.” The main premise is that not only is it alright to be clumsy, it’s good to be clumsy. That allows us to throw expectations out the window and play. We will use a combination of ink and watercolor, and a highly unusual way of holding the brush, to create this meditative artwork. Absolutely no artistic experience or skill is required. Registration begins Monday, Feb. 12.

Movie Night, “Marshall”
Friday, Feb. 16, 6 pm
Young Thurgood Marshall faces one of his greatest challenges while working as a lawyer for the NAACP. Marshall travels to conservative Connecticut when wealthy socialite, Eleanor Strubing, accuses black chauffeur, Joseph Spell, of sexual assault and attempted murder. He soon teams up with Sam Friedman, a local Jewish lawyer who’s never handled a criminal case. Together, the two men build a defense while contending with racist and anti-Semitic views from those who deem Spell to be guilty. Rated PG-13. Light refreshments will be served.

How to Play Ukulele
Saturday, March 3, 2‒4 pm
(adults and children over 10 accompanied by adults)
No prior musical experience is required. Madison is home to a 650-member club called Madison Area Ukulele Initiative (MAUI). This workshop and sing-along will be facilitated by MAUI director and veteran teacher Andrew Wilke. You’ll learn how to tune, strum and play simple chords in a relaxed, fun learning environment. Five MAUI members will be available to help beginners learn to play in this free, two-hour workshop and sing-along. Movie Night, “Victoria and Abdul”

Abdul Karim arrives from India to participate in Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee. The young clerk is surprised to find favor with the queen herself. As Victoria questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance that her household and inner circle try to destroy. As their friendship deepens, the queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes, joyfully reclaiming her humanity. Rated PG-13. Light refreshments will be served.

One-On-One Writing Assistance
Mondays, 4–7 pm
Free one-hour sessions for writing help, including resumes, cover letters, online job searches, applications and any creative writing. This program is funded through a grant and staffed by UW Writing Assistance staff. Call 246-4547 to sign up.
